Event Description

What are some tips and tricks for pitching your TV series? What's it really like to be the showrunner of a hit show? How do you take over as showrunner for an already established show? How do you work your way up the ranks of the writers room? Showrunner Angela Kang will answer these questions and many more during this virtual workshop! She'll talk about working up the ranks from an intern on "Grey's Anatomy" to staff writer on FX's "Terriers" and all of her jobs on "The Walking Dead" from staff writer, to story editor, to producer and finally showrunner. Plus, Angela will provide feedback on several written elevator pitches submitted by attendees. A few will be chosen for the live critique so that all attendees can learn from the feedback. After you register, your confirmation email will have a link for submitting your elevator pitch (it will be at the bottom of the email under "Additional Information"). The deadline to submit is noon Eastern on Wednesday, June 9. You do NOT need to submit an elevator pitch to attend; you're welcome to come and learn from other examples! We will email all attendees a link to the Zoom webinar on the day of the event. She joined the show’s writing staff in Season Two as a Story Editor, quickly rising up the ranks to Co-Executive Producer by Season Five. Kang expanded her relationship with AMC in Season Seven by signing an overall deal to continue her work on the hit series while developing new projects for the studio. That same year, she was named one of Variety’s 2016 10 TV Writers to Watch. Kang’s promotion to Showrunner of The Walking Dead was announced in January 2018, going into Season Nine of the acclaimed series. She was recently named to Variety’s 2020 TV Producers Impact Report, which spotlights producers who made the biggest impacts on the scripted television business, as well as The Hollywood Reporter’s list of 50 Most Powerful Showrunners of 2020. Kang’s first industry experiences were as a features development intern for the Dino De Laurentiis Company and a writers’ office/research intern for ABC’s Private Practice. Shortly after completing the CBS Writers Mentoring Program and graduating from film school, she landed her first staff writing job on NBC’s Day One. She then went on to write for the critically acclaimed cult favorite FX series Terriers before starting on The Walking Dead in 2011. A Southern California native, Kang received a B.A. in Theater and English from Occidental College, and an M.F.A. in Writing for Screen and Television from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she was a recipient of the prestigious Annenberg Graduate Fellowship.
