Event Description

The 6 day barefoot hoof trimming course is really a learning vacation for the horse lover, we spend our days trimming and the evenings talking about horses and our various adventures and if the situation is right we even try to sneak out for an evening ride or two. Camp onsite for an all inclusive experience with meals provided or book a nearby hotel for a more relaxing getaway. This comprehensive course will give you the skills needed to confidently assess and evaluate a horse's hoof care needs and trim to achieve natural hoof mechanics and function based on each horse's individual conformation and hoof shape. This course includes access to our private Facebook group for students to share pictures, ask for advice and get help. Included in your tuition is the prerequisite course to this one, our Online Hoof Theory Course. We start in the classroom on Day 1, with a group discussion and review of the online course content. In the afternoon we will trim and dissect cadaver hooves to further explore the inner workings of the hoof. The remainder of the week we will do as much hands on guided trimming as we can do. This will vary student to student depending on experience level, but everyone will get to trim and see a variety of hooves, with one on one guidance and instruction. By the end of the week you will have a thorough understanding of the inner workings of the hoof, and how to trim to maximize function, health and comfort. This course is suitable for anyone, whether you have any previous trimming experience or not. Class sizes are kept small and students are grouped into pairs according to experience level. This makes it easy to allow more experienced students to learn more advanced techniques and beginner students to take their time and learn the foundations of trimming. We will see a variety of horses throughout this course, we have 8 resident school horses, various boarded horses, and a variety of local locations with herds that are available for us to trim. Students can also bring their own horses to trim if we have paddock space available. ?Tools will be provided for the in class trimming, and you will receive a tool bag to get you started. The tool bag includes: Tool bag, rasp, rasp handle, hoof knife, knife sharpener, ruler, gauges, gloves and a hoof pick. Nippers, chaps and hoof stands are not included in your take home tool bag but will be available for use while in class and for purchase. It is recommended you wear steel toed shoes or horse appropriate boots and jeans for the hands on trimming portion of class. You are welcome to bring your own tools if you have them. Participants will receive a certificate upon finishing this course. If you are interested in pursuing trimming professionally this course is the starting point. Upon completion we will work with you to design a custom apprenticeship program just for you. Course cost is $2000 plus taxes and that includes the prerequisite online course, your tools to take home and free onsite camping as well as all meals for the week. To secure your space click the link above to register and pay your deposit. The remaining balance is not due until the course start date.
