There are many great reasons to live in a condo, but one of the most common concerns we hear from those considering downsizing is storage and space. If you are downsizing, you may be trying to get your 3,000 sq ft. home into an 800 sq ft. condominium and while there aren’t any magical hacks that will make purging unnecessary, there are some clever space saving tips that can help you make the most of your condo. Here are five...

Select furniture that does double-duty

If you’re downsizing from a spacious home to a Kelowna condo, there’s a very good chance that you will have to purchase new furniture for your new pad - the old stuff simply won’t fit! When buying furniture, look for pieces that include storage nooks cabinets or that work well in multiple spaces. For example, use your coffee table trunk to store extra linens or choose a bed that has drawers underneath to store off-season clothes.

Build up, not out

Most newer condos are built with higher ceilings which give rooms a sense of spaciousness. While your condo’s footprint may not be that big, you can certainly take advantage of those ceiling heights and install shelving units, cabinets and in some cases, even a mezzanine to help store all of those items that aren’t used as often.

Splurge on kitchen storage

The kitchen is one of the biggest challenges for those who are downsizing. Luckily for you, there are all kinds of clever solutions for kitchen storage, from pull-out baskets and lid organizers for pots to solutions that make it easy to deal with deep cabinets.

Install sliding doors

Depending on the design of your condo, you may have doorways that create unusable space or make furniture placement awkward. If possible, consider removing your swing doors and install sliding ‘barn doors’ so that you can create better traffic flow and place furniture and shelving adjacent to doorways.

Consider built-ins that are built into the wall

There can be quite a lot of useful space between your wall joists. Years ago, it was common practice for medicine cabinets to be built into the space between your joists. These days, you can take the same concept and use it for other small items like jewellery, spices in the kitchen, and office supplies.
