OPINION

Hon. Linda Reid,
Speaker of the BC Legislative Assembly
Province of British Columbia
Room 207, Parliament Buildings
Victoria, BC V8V 1X4

VIA EMAIL:  Speaker@leg.bc.ca

Dear Hon. Madam Speaker,

I am writing to you to request that you launch an investigation into the inappropriate use of public money by MLA Jackie Tegart for a partisan, four-page wrap around, newspaper cover ad she placed in the Merritt Herald on Thursday, December 29, 2016. Her newspaper ad begins “Our BC Liberal government continues to stick to our plan…"

This was an MLA Constituency report and her political party should not have been mentioned let alone, blatantly promoted in a newspaper ad done at the public’s expense. Upon checking the rules on MLA advertising with the public money provided to them to run their non-partisan constituency office, it says use of a political party’s name is not allowed. See page 2 ineligible expenses http://members.leg.bc.ca/getting-started/managing-constit-office.htm#allowance.

This situation is nothing more than a deliberate case of knowingly breaking the rules, intentional misuse of public funds and MLA Jackie Tegart needs to be held accountable for her actions. I am requesting that you immediately instruct MLA Jackie Tegart that she may not promote her political party using public dollars; and, further, that you instruct her that she needs to seek an alternate source to pay for her partisan newspaper ad taken out on Thursday, December 29, 2016 in the Merritt Herald.

Yours sincerely,

Don Vincent
Merritt, BC

CC:  MLA Claire Trevena, Deputy Speaker of the BC Legislature
