It isn’t a secret that kids across Canada are not getting enough physical activity. Amongst kids above the age of five, 93% are not meeting Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines of 1 hour of moderate to vigorous activity each day—the result being that 1 in 4 Canadian kids battle with their weight.
Our society has shifted towards efficiency in everything we do, which leaves less opportunity for spontaneous activity. It is quicker to drive kids to school than let them walk or run their way there, and more convenient to take the elevator rather than the stairs. Research shows that parents place high priority on the health and development of their children, but competing demands increase the challenges many face in raising their kids. According to Active Kids Canada only 37% of parents said they found enough time last year for regular active play with their children.
The health of our kids is a serious issue and the YMCA believes in the importance of helping families live healthier, more holistic lives. Y programs equip families with habits they can live by every day; beyond the walls of the YMCA.
One way that YMCA is helping to promote healthy active lifestyles is through its annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day. This Sunday, June 1st, 2014, the YMCA of Okanagan is encouraging kids and their parents to take part in this free community event where families can be active and have fun together. YMCA Healthy Kids Day will put some play in your kids’ day and give them tools to grow and thrive in mind, body and spirit. Who says being healthy can’t be fun?
Who: FREE for everyone in the community.
What: Enjoy heart pumping entertainment, 40 activity stations, giant Inflatables, a climbing wall, arts and crafts, takeaways for family health, a FREE healthy BBQ and more.
Where: Both inside and outside Kelowna Family YMCA, 375 Hartman Road.
When: Sunday June 1, 12-4pm.
Why: Starting healthy habits early in life sets the stage for future physical, social, emotional and mental development. Kids are our community’s future. This event is a great opportunity for families to spend time together and have fun.
