KAMLOOPS - The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball continued to tune up for the 2016-17 Canada West regular season on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The ‘Pack hosted the MacEwan University Griffins on the Warner Rentals court at the Tournament Capital Centre and beat them 51-44.

SYNOPSIS

The WolfPack rested a number of their players but got all 10 that dressed into the game. TRU was up 30-23 at the half. MacEwan outscored the ‘Pack 12-11 in the second quarter and 11-8 in the fourth quarter.

KEY STATS:

MacEwan Griffins:
Paige Knull 15 points, 5 rebs (all on defence), 5-6 (FG-FGA), 2-2 (3 pt FG-FGA) 3-4 (FT-FTA), 30 mins.
Kerilynn MacLennan 10 points, 7 rebs (all on defence), 2-5 (FG-FGA), 29 mins.

TRU WolfPack
Shenise Sigsworth,  13 points,  4 reb (3 on offense), 6-14 (FG-FGA), 1-2 (3 pt FG-FGA), 2 assists, 1 steal, 27 mins.
Chelsey Hoey  11 points, 11 reb (8 on defense), 3-11 (FG-FGA), 5-6 (FT-FTA), 2 assists, 5 steals, 30 mins.
Emma Piggin  9 points, 5 reb (4 on defense), 3-14 (FG-FGA), 1-6 (3 pt FG-FGA), 2-2 (FT-FTA), 1 block,1 steal, 27 mins.

“I liked the effort. The execution wasn’t what it should be at this stage but it is early. You won’t win too many games by scoring 51 points. It had to be a team effort. We are down Michelle (Bos, 3rd year, guard, Surrey, BC). She is a key to our offensive flow. We didn’t score that many points but team defense is something we stress. I was proud of everyone on that end,” TRU head coach Scott Reeves says.

“I like that we fought. We came to fight. We had a few lapses in the game, especially in the start of the fourth quarter.  We didn’t come out to start the game as well as I would have wanted. We had a lot of young kids getting some experience today and they really, really battled,” MacEwan head coach Katherine Adams says.

UP NEXT:

The WolfPack head to Carleton University in Ottawa next week for their final exhibition tournament of the year. MacEwan has two weeks off before the start of the Canada West regular season.

TRU will entertain the UBC Thunderbirds in their home opening/season opening weekend Nov. 4-5 on the Warner Rentals Court at the TCC.  Tip off on Friday Nov. 4 will be 6 p.m.

MacEwan visits the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Nov. 4-5 to start the year.
