Warmer weekend ahead for Kamloops

KAMLOOPS - After cooler temperatures and lots of snow over recently, this weekend marks what should be a welcome break for many in the Kamloops area.

Environment Canada is calling for highs to be at seasonal normals of -1 Celsius all weekend, and heading into next week, but overnight temperatures will range from just -2 C to -4 C, well above the seasonal normal of -8.

Along with the warmer temperatures we can expect a mostly cloudy weekend, along with a chance of flurries tonight, Jan. 8, and Saturday.

If you’re heading out on the highways today expect a mix of compact snow, slushy sections and slippery sections, as well as fog patches on some parts of the Coquihalla Highway, Highway 97C and Highway 3.

The warmer temperatures and low to moderate risk of avalanche throughout the region could make for ideal ski or backcountry play time this weekend as well. Temperatures are expected to reach between -4 C and -6C at Sun Peaks, along with a mix of sun and cloud while Avalanche Canada is calling for a low to moderate risk of avalanche throughout most of the region, with only the alpine level in the Kootenay Boundary range showing a considerable risk.
