PENTICTON -- The Penticton Vees are honoring team Chaplain Jamie Weberg, who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer, at their home game tonight.
The Vees are facing off against the Trail Smoke Eaters on home ice this evening, but before the game gets going there will be a video presentation and honorary puck drop. The team will also give 50 percent of walk-up ticket sales to the Weberg family to help with treatment costs. The rare form of cancer that Weberg is diagnosed with is incurable but treatments are available.
The team has been very supportive of Weberg and his family since they received his diagnosis two weeks ago.
“It’s very overwhelming...they’ve rallied, and always supported me,” he said.
Weberg said he doesn’t know what to expect tonight -- he just wants the turnout to be above average.
“And I’m sure it will be,” he said. “But for the team and the morale.”
In addition to being team Chaplain, Weberg is a pastor at the Penticton Church of Nazarene. While he has been taking things easy lately, Weberg will be in attendance at the game tonight. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
