PENTICTON - Josh Laframboise, Steen Cooper and Patrick Newell didn’t take long to get familiar with one another. The new look line combined for three goals and eight points, in the Penticton Vees 5-1 win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in their home opener at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Cooper and Laframboise finished with a goal and two assists each to pace the attack and Patrick Newell had a goal and added an assist in the win.

Salmon Arm tried to spoil the party in the first period, as Nic Hutchison opened the scoring whilst short-handed.  Hunter Miska bobbled the puck behind the Vees net and Hutchison took it away and curled around and slid it in 7:58.

The Vees used their next power-play to get back on even terms, as Dante Fabbro scored his first BCHL goal at 13:16. Tyson Jost setup Fabbro for the one-timer from the blue-line and his blast blew through a crowd and past Angus Redmond.

Newell put the Vees ahead for the first time Friday midway through the second period, as he cleaned up his own rebound. Newell was stopped on his initial attempt on a partial break down the wing but he scooped the rebound over a prone Redmond at 13:35 for his first in Vees colours.

Laframboise and Cooper took over in the third period as the two took turns setting each other up. Laframboise gave the Vees some breathing room just thirty-seconds into the frame. Laframboise took the puck away from the defenseman, and after a quick exchange with Cooper, he snapped the puck over Redmond’s glove for his third of the season.

The power-play struck again minutes after Laframboise put the Vees up a pair of goals. Demico Hannoun bagged his third of the year when he squeaked his shot through the legs of Redmond at 3:11. Redmond lost his stick at the start of the play and Hannoun took full advantage, walking out from the corner and going five-hole.

Cooper put the finishing touches on the game ten minutes later. It was Laframboise turning playmaker, as he dropped the puck to Cooper on an odd-man rush and the veteran made no mistake. Cooper found an opening on the blocker-side and through traffic to round at the scoring at 13:49.

Final Score: 5-1 Vees

Shots: 32-25 Vees

Power-Plays: Vees 2-4 Silverbacks 0-1

Three Stars: 1) Josh Laframboise 2) Steen Cooper 3) Dante Fabbro

Attendance: 2,509

Friday was the Vees sixth straight home opening win at the SOEC, dating back to 2008 when the building opened. The Vees are now 4-0-0 in this young season when the lead after forty-minutes; interesting enough they’re 3-1-0 when the opposition scores first.

The Vees look for the weekend sweep tomorrow when they head up to the North Okanagan to face the Silverbacks in the back half of the weekend home-and-home set. Puck drop is 7 p.m. from the Shaw Centre and fans can listen on EZ Rock AM 800 or they can watch on www.fasthockey.com.
