Vees acquire talented forward in three team trade

PENTICTON – The Penticton Vees have acquired forward Steen Cooper (95) from the Cowichan Valley Capitals for defenseman Clint Filbrandt (95) and the playing rights of defenseman Matt Berry-Lamontagna (93).

The Vees acquired the playing rights of Berry from the Coquitlam Express, and then packaged him and Filbrandt to Cowichan Valley for the 18 year-old Cooper.

Cooper, 18, is in his third season in the BCHL, all with his hometown Capitals. Through 27 games, the centerman has 3 goals and 18 points and was third in team scoring at time of the trade. The Duncan, BC native recently won a bronze medal with team Canada West at the 2013 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Last season Cooper set career highs in goals (10) and points (27) in 43 games with the Caps. Cooper is committed to Minnesota State University, Mankato for the 2015-16 season.

Vees President, General Manager and Head Coach Fred Harbinson says Cooper fills a need upfront, “Steen is a play-making centerman that we’ve wanted to add to our forward group for some time. He competes extremely hard and brings plenty of experience despite being 18 and will be a go-to player for us next year as well.”

Filbrandt, 18, played in nine games for the Vees, picking up one assist from the blue-line to go along with seven penalty-minutes. The Calgary, AB product was added to the Vees roster in early October after coming over from the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League.

The Vees organization would like to thank Clint for his contributions to the team both on the ice and in the community. The Vees would also like to welcome Steen to the organization and to the South Okanagan. Cooper will make his debut on Wednesday, December 4th, when the Vees host the Merritt Centennials at the SOEC in their annual Teddy Bear Toss night. Tickets are just $5 and are available at the Valley first Box Office (at the SOEC).
