MARKHAM, Ill. - Police in suburban Chicago say an officer fatally shot a man while responding to reports of a fight in a nightclub parking lot.

Markham Police Chief Mack Sanders told the Chicago Tribune ( ) that the officer believed his safety was at risk from an armed man "in close proximity" and shot him around 3 a.m. Sunday. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as 36-year-old Donte Jones of Maywood. An autopsy is planned Monday.

Markham is about 20 miles southwest of downtown Chicago.
