BOSTON - The Latest on two Boston police officers shot while responding to a report of a person with a gun (all times local):

1:40 p.m.

Boston's police commissioner says the man who shot and critically wounded two officers was not licensed to own a gun in Massachusetts.

Police say 33-year-old Kirk Figueroa was wearing body armour when he opened fire on police late Wednesday with what Commissioner William Evans called a "tactical shotgun."

The officers were responding to a 911 call from Figueroa's roommate who said Figueroa was threatening him with a knife.

Evans identified the injured officers as 27-year veteran Richard Cintolo and 12-year veteran Matt Morris. He says an artery in Morris' leg was severed and his life was probably saved by another officer who tied a tourniquet on his leg.

Both officers remain hospitalized in critical condition, but Evans says they are recovering. He has spoken to both.

Figueroa was killed.

The man Boston police say shot and critically wounded two officers was a constable who described himself on a website as a former member of a U.S. Army Reserve military police unit, a bounty hunter in California and a former corrections officer.

Police have identified the shooter as 33-year-old Kirk Figueroa. They say he opened fire on police when they responded to a domestic disturbance call in East Boston on Wednesday night. He was shot and killed by police.

A car with the name of a website was towed from the shooting scene Thursday morning.

On the website, elitepolicing.org, a man who identifies himself as Kirk Figueroa says his company, Code Blue Protection Corp., provides police support, fugitive "apprehension and extradition services" and armoured car training. He also says he is trained in mixed martial arts.

Constables are authorized to serve subpoenas and other legal documents.

Boston police say a man who shot two officers was not known to authorities before he allegedly opened fire as officers responded to a domestic call in East Boston.

Police have identified the suspect as 33-year-old Kirk Figueroa.

Commissioner William Evans says Figueroa was wearing body armour and armed with an assault rifle when he shot the officers late Wednesday. He was shot and killed by police.

A spokesman said Boston police had never arrested Figueroa before.

The injured officers were out of surgery by Thursday morning. They are still in critical condition. Their names have not been released yet.

Police Commissioner William Evans tells WBZ-AM on Thursday morning that he understood that surgery "went well" and the officers' families are with them.

He says they were shot Wednesday night by a 33-year-old man with body armour and what he described as an "assault" rifle. The suspect was shot and killed by police.

Evans described a "hectic scene" with other officers rushing to the aid of their injured colleagues and pulling them to safety. He said one officer fashioned a tourniquet, while another put a finger on one of the wounds.

The injured officers' names were not immediately released.

He says deadly force is a last resort for police but in this case "we had to do what we had to do."

Authorities say nine officers are being treated for minor injuries, stress and trauma after a shootout left two Boston police officers wounded and a suspect dead.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said at an early Thursday news conference that officers were responding to a report of a person with a gun just after 11 p.m. Wednesday in East Boston when they came under fire.

Evans says the two wounded officers were hospitalized in "extremely critical condition." Their names have not been released. He said nine other officers were being treated at Tufts Medical Center.

Police initially asked residents in the East Boston neighbourhood to shelter in place as they searched for a suspect. They later said the suspect was killed and the situation was under control.
