Attention Kelowna residents of the Black Mountain, Rutland, and Glenmore neigbourhoods:
UBCO's KULA Club, in collaboration with University Christian Ministry (UCM) and the UBCO Young Liberals of Canada Club, will be coming to your neighbourhood on Halloween to "Trick or Eat".

The KULA Club is a non-profit club that is based on the idea of "Paying it Forward" through our four pillars of R.I.S.E. (Reciprocity, Initiative, Service, and Education). We organize a variety of awareness and fundraising events for many different local and global organizations, usually with a humanitarian focus. When we come around, rather than asking for candy we are going to be asking for non-perishable food items that will be donated to the UBCO Food Exchange and the Kelowna Community Foodbank.

We have numerous groups of students who will be circulating in these areas on Thursday, October 31, 2013, between 5 to 7 p.m. in costume and coming door to door to collect donations. Among food items we need: canned fruit and vegetables, canned fish, soup, peanut butter, pasta, and pasta sauce.

This event is officially registered with “Trick or Eat,”(www.trickoreat.ca), an organization that aims to target the issue of food insecurity in Canada.

"The experience of food insecurity can range from concerns about running out of food before there is additional money to buy more, to the inability to afford a balanced diet, to going hungry, missing meals, and in extreme cases, not eating for a whole day because of a lack of food and money for food. (Tarasuk, Mitchell, & Dachner, 2011)"

According to Trick or Eat:
In 2011, 3.9 million individuals experienced some level of food insecurity, and 1.1 million of them were children.
450,000 more Canadians were living in households affected by food insecurity in 2011 than in 2008.
882,188 Canadians used a food bank in March of 2012, which is 31% higher than in March of 2008.
38% of the total food bank users are children and youth under age 18.

This year, the goal is to collect over $550,000 worth of food and $50,000 in online donations to support over 100 local food agencies, (such as food banks, shelters and soup kitchens) across Canada.
