SHUSWAP – A group created to establish sustainable trails throughout the Shuswap eight years ago is being recognized as the 2012 Volunteer Group of the Year by B.C. Parks.

The Shuswap Trails Alliance has worked on more than 70 projects over those years by working with 200 groups, organizations and businesses thanks to the thousands of volunteer hours put into the program.

The alliance builds trails in addition to taking part in marketing, conservation, research, protection, maintenance and planning. Over 70 km of new trails have been created throughout the Shuswap, impacting 12 communities.

The group has also put in seven trail systems, 19 trails, completed seven major upgrades and installed more than 200 signs in addition to raising funds and in-kind investments to help cover the costs of these projects.

The alliance also hosts regular workshops and events at the many trails throughout the region — from snowshoeing and cycling to hikes and camping.

B.C. Parks notes the relationship building with local community and First Nations has been of 'immeasurable value' to staff.
