Trailer thieves target Lake Country

LAKE COUNTRY - The RCMP is warning residents of Lake Country to secure their trailers after reports of attempted and successful thefts in the area.

Just after 10 p.m. January 5, Lake Country RCMP were told a cargo trailer was left abandoned in the middle of the 12,000 block of Carrs Landing Road. It had been stolen from a driveway on Moberly Road.

The next day at 10:19 a.m. a hydraulic dump trailer was reported stolen from the area of Granite Road. It happened again January 11 at about 2:35 with an attempted theft of another cargo trailer from the 14,000 block of Carrs Landing Road. This time the suspects were caught on surveillance video attempting to hook up to the trailer to tow it away. Mounties say it appears the receiver was too big for the suspects' tow ball causing the trailer to dislodge and roll back into the complainant's driveway. There was no damage.

Consider the following tips to help prevent the theft of your trailer:

-   Park your trailer out of sight from the roadway
-   Park your trailer with the tongue pointing away from the roadway
-   Use a hitch coupler lock
-   Remove one or all of the trailers wheels
-   Use a wheel lock
-   Secure the trailer to a tree or large fixed object with a chain or heavy cable
-   Park a vehicle in front of your trailer

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Lake Country RCMP at 250-766-2288. Remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net or by texting your tip to CRIMES (274637) ktown.
