The City of Kamloops introduces new format for 2014 budget meetings

KAMLOOPS – Each year the City hosts public meetings regarding the City budget to give citizens an overview and hear their comments and suggestions. This year, City Council is not only offering the meetings earlier in the year, but changing them to a workshop-style format to encourage meaningful conversation regarding the 2014 budget.

This year’s focus is on City service levels. Roll up your sleeves and participate in these sessions with City staff and Council regarding your priorities in service levels; things like how often your garbage is picked up, how often the sports fields are maintained, hours of operation at City facilities and utilities management. Service levels are one of the largest influences on the annual budget and we want to know what’s important to you. So let’s talk about it.

For convenience, the City is offering one daytime session and one evening session:

-  Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at Parkside Lounge, Interior Savings Centre; and
-  Monday, November 4th, 2013 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm at McArthur Island Sports Centre.

Last year saw the successful addition of social media into the budget meeting, enhancing the level of public engagement. Similarly this year residents can follow along and contribute to the conversation on Twitter using #kamloopsbudget.

Documents to support the budget meetings are viewable at www.kamloops.ca/2014budget.

Input from these public meetings will be presented to City Council on November 26th, prior to the introduction of the Five-Year Financial Plan.

Your participation will influence the process. Mayor, Council and City managers will develop a broader understanding of community interests, concerns, and ideas. These factors are considered and weighed before final deliberation of the budget.

So let’s talk. By sharing your priorities and participating in the City’s budget process, you can help create a strong future for our city.
