So, was William Shakespeare the greatest author and playwright of all time, or merely the most celebrated literary fraud the world has seen?

Based on the greatest theatrical debate of all time, The Shakespeare Show uses fast-paced comedy to investigate the theory that the plays of William Shakespeare were an out-and-out deception, actually penned by Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford.

Just like one of his tragic heroes, Oxford, played by Tara Travis in a theatrical bending of the genders, sets his own tragedy in motion. He uses young Will Shakespeare, played by Ryan Gladstone, the boy who holds the horses outside the theatre, as a front for his playwriting ventures.

The result?  As reviewed in the Edmonton Journal, The Shakespeare Show is another “relentlessly clever, action-packed and intellectually satisfying” Monster Theatre adventure; complete with puppets, songs, satire and swordfights.

Written by Monster Theatre’s Artistic Director Ryan Gladstone, The Shakespeare Show was exhaustively researched and composed entirely in iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets. First produced on the Canadian Fringe Festival circuit, The Shakespeare Show won Pick of the Fringe in Vancouver. Directed by Karen Hamm, this fast-paced physical comedy has the actors each playing dozens of roles.

The Shakespeare Show will be performed for two evenings, Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 7 p.m. at University Theatre, Administration Building, 1138 Alumni Rd., UBC’s Okanagan campus, Kelowna. Admission is $10 at the door.
