KAMLOOPS — A fast course and a missed gate knocked Kamloops' Elli Terwiel out of the running after the first run of the slalom course at the Sochi Olympics this morning.

Terwiel was one of 28 skiers to not get past the first run, 23 of whom did not finish the race. The Sun Peaks skier started the race a bit choppy and turned too early about halfway down the course, her right ski crossing the wrong side of a gate.

Fellow Canadian Erin Mielzynski also did not finish the race, though Brittany Phelan and Marie-Michele Gagnon both qualified for run two in 17th and 10th place. Run two starts at 8:15 a.m. and will feature 60 skiers. The second run will be added to the first run to determine the final results.
