A selection of quotes about the plan to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees

OTTAWA - Some quotes on the Liberal government's Syrian refugees plan announced Tuesday.

"This is not a federal project, this is not even a government project, this is a national project that will involve all Canadians." Immigration Minister John McCallum.

___

"We will welcome them with a smile." McCallum.

___

"Safety and security have always been at the very top of our priority list." Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale.

___

"Before anyone gets on a plane to come to Canada, the security scanning will be completed overseas." Goodale.

___

"We will meet the humanitarian imperative before us." Goodale.

___

"Canada will make a difference, and we encourage all Canadians to do what they can to help." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

___

"While the decision to move back the deadline is welcomed, I still don't believe there should be a specific deadline at all. A target date is reasonable. But all the time that might be necessary to ensure security and successful settlement should be taken, whether that can get done by the end of February or not." Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall.

___

"Resettlement is certainly an important part of how Canada can contribute to help those who have fled the violence in Syria. We join Canadians from across the country in welcoming Syrian refugees here." CARE Canada.

___

"We are ready to welcome these people who have suffered so much, with a plan that will both address the health of refugees while continuing to protect and maintain the good health of all Canadians." Health Minister Jane Philpott.

___

"All levels of government are working together with private citizens, not-for-profits and service agencies to prepare the ground for the successful resettlement of thousands of Syrian refugees in the coming weeks. This is Canada at its very best and municipalities are proud to be part of this national effort." Raymond Louie, president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

___

"We are pleased that Mr. Trudeau has today listened to Canadians and abandoned a timeline that was not workable. Any resettlement plan must allow for the full integration of refugees as welcome members of Canadian society." Michelle Rempel, Conservative immigration critic.

___

"Today's announcement by the Liberals still leaves Canadians with many unanswered questions about plans for caring for refugees upon arrival, and specifically, the real costs of the plan, impacts on provincial governments, and the involvement of our Canadian Armed Forces." Rempel.

___

"Instead of resettling 25,000 government-assisted refugees by the end of year, the Liberals are now confirming only 10,000 refugees will be accepted before January 1st. Their plan now calls for 10,000 fewer government-sponsored refugees than they promised during the election campaign." NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan.
