Swan Lake standoff ends peacefully

A man who threatened to stab police—and himself— was arrested this morning after a very long night.

Last night at 6 p.m. Vernon mounties were called to a domestic disturbance in the 7800 block of Pleasant Valley Rd, in the Swan Lake area. Three people were in the residence at the time. After a while, a male and female left the house leaving the suspect as the lone occupant.

"Officers made contact with the 41-year-old suspect who repeatedly told police that he had knives and would stab police if they entered the residence and then he would harm himself," said Gord Molendyk, spokesperson for the RCMP.

"The suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol," Molendyk said. "(He) claimed to have self-inflicted knife wounds on his hand and arm."

RCMP negotiators as well as members of the South East District Emergency Response Team were called in to assist. The suspect was taken into custody without incident just before 5 a.m. Feb. 8.

"His injuries were found to be limited to small cut on his hand," Molendyk said, adding he was taken to Vernon hospital for treatment and examination.

Charges are being considered in this case as investigators continue to work on this file.
