It's one of the first signs of summer.

The 19th Annual Sunshine Festival goes on Saturday in downtown Vernon.

There really is something for the whole family, from the Telus Kids Zone to live entertainment and the city's largest sidewalk sale.

"The big draw this year is the new Telus Kids Zone," says Downtown Vernon Association executive director Louise Delaney. "It features a variety of activities for families and children."

The Kids Zone includes a petting zoo sponsored by Historic O'Keefe Ranch and a giant sandpile.

"The sandpile will be infiltrated with gifts. that kids are going to be lined up with buckets and shovels and they'll dig, dig, dig until they can find prizes. treasure hunt. Merchants have donated prizes including a new bike," says Delaney.

There will be three sound stages with live entertainment, including local dance groups and entertainers, along with students from Wentworth Music.

Local artisans will set up tents to sell their wares and there will be all kinds of food from the merchants downtown.

The downtown revitalization project underway means a couple blocks won't have tents and street vendors.

"The paving is done and the project is close to completion," says Delaney. "The merchants in the construction area will be open for business."

There is free parking downtown on Saturday. If you take the bus, it will be free if you're travelling to and from downtown within the city limits.
