TORONTO - Toronto FC placed defender Ahmed Kantari on waivers Wednesday.

The move was expected as a source told The Canadian Press on Monday the Moroccan international centre back's days with Toronto were numbered.

Kantari, 30, signed with Toronto in late July, 10 days after former captain and centre back Steven Caldwell retired.

The former Lens player appeared in 12 games with 10 starts. With little time to adjust, Kantari had an up-and-down entry into Major League Soccer.

With a full season salary listed at US$345,000, he didn't come cheap. That, combined with the acquisition of veteran MLS defender Drew Moor in the off-season, made Kantari expendable.

Toronto also has Polish international Damien Perquis, Nick Hagglund, Eriq Zavaleta and Clement Simonon available at centre back.

Improving defence has been a key off-season goal for Toronto, which conceded a league-worst 58 goals last season.
