Snow having little impact at Kelowna airport

STILL A VERY BUSY DAY AT YLW

KELOWNA – Today is one of the three busiest days of the year for staff and passengers at the Kelowna International Airport.

On Dec. 23, as well as Dec. 27 and Jan. 3, the Interior's largest airport see roughly one-third more passengers go through than the weeks before and after.

Aiport spokesperson Jasmine Patrick says more staff will be on hand to accommodate the extra traffic.

“We try to plan the best as possible,” she says. “It’s definitely one of our busiest days and we’re expecting about 7,000 arriving and departing today.”

The forecast for Kelowna includes flurries throughout the day but so far there have been only a few minor delays.

Patrick does however recommend anyone picking up passengers coming from Calgary to check arrival times as there are several major delays in the southern Alberta city due to a snowstorm.

Although Kelowna’s weather isn’t affecting airport operations it can make walks to and from parking lots more difficult.

“We are recommending people try to take alternative transport to the airport,” she says. “If you can get a friend to take you, or take a shuttle or bus, they can drop you off right at the terminal.”

She also recommends leaving more time to get to your gate.

“More passengers mean longer lineups unfortunately,” she says. “We’re recommending people traveling domestic arrive one and a half hours before their flight and two hours for international. The earlier the better.”
