Hugh Segal, former senator, political adviser, honoured by defence group

OTTAWA - The Conference of Defence Associations Institute has named former senator Hugh Segal as this year's winner of its Vimy Award.

The institute is a non-partisan organization that promotes public discourse on defence and security issues.

Segal left the Senate in 2014 to become Master of Massey College in Toronto.

During his long career, he was chief of staff to Ontario premier Bill Davis in the 1970s and '80s and held the same post with Brian Mulroney in the 1990s.

He taught at the University of Toronto Law School and lectured in strategic studies on a pro-bono basis for over 20 years at the Canadian Forces College.

The Vimy Award is presented annually to a prominent Canadian who has made outstanding contributions towards the security and defence of Canada and the preservation of democratic values.

The institute said Segal was a unanimous choice:

"Mr. Segal is a distinguished Canadian who has exhibited the highest standards of service to Canada."

Segal was recently re-appointed as an honorary captain of the Royal Canadian Navy. He is a former chairman of the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies and now is chairman of the NATO Council of Canada.

Other recipients of the Vimy Award include former prime minister Joe Clark, retired generals Lewis Mackenzie and Romeo Dallaire, former defence minister and onetime sergeant Barney Danson, historians Jack Granatstein and David Bercuson and former governor general Adrienne Clarkson.

The award will be presented Nov. 6.
