Russian international won't face charges after leaving the country; defence

KAMLOOPS - A former Kamloops international student's lawyer said a sexual assault charge was recently dropped because both the accused and alleged victim were leaving the country.

"Both parties were going back to their home countries," said defence lawyer John Hogg. "They're never going to be in Kamloops again."

Former Russian international student in Kamloops, Anton Marin, was charged with one count of sexual assault allegedly against another student.

The charge was stayed by the Crown on Aug. 8.

The accused went back to Russia and the woman is protected by a court ban.

"It was deemed not to be in the public interest to pursue," Hogg said.
