PENTICTON - Some of the fittest people in the world will be racing all over Penticton next week for the Challenge Penticton triathlon.

It's not quite got the same ring as Penticton Ironman, which had the biggest circle on the calendar here for the past 30 years. This is the first year for the new Challenge event.

From Wednesday until Monday the city will celebrate all things triathlon, a race event combining swimming, bicycle racing and running. Wednesday will have a parade from Lakeshore Drive to Gyro Park at 4 p.m. with an expo, a party, barbecued food and a beer garden all starting at 5 p.m.

A massive channel float is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday on the Okanagan River channel with a one and five-kilometre fun run at 6 p.m. There will also be an underpants (underwear) run led by the Peach City Runners at 9 a.m. in the Gyro Park area, a paddle regatta from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a special shoe race also at 11 a.m. A street dance will close the north end of Main Street from 6 to 10 p.m.

On Saturday athletes will have from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check their bikes in. Sunday is race day. For more information on routes go to the Challenge Penticton website.

On Monday, there will be a massive community breakfast in Gyro Park and athletes can register for the 2014 Challenge Penticton races.
