PENTICTON - A Keremeos man and repeat sex offender will spend five years in jail after pleading guilty to sexually touching a minor.
Helge E. Wilson, 61, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching by a minor after a series of incidents that took place between April and May 2013. He was sentenced to five years in prison Monday in Penticton Provincial Court.
On three separate occasions, Wilson dropped his pants and asked the victim, a then 14-year-old boy, to also drop his pants. They both proceeded to touch each other and themselves, and on more than one occasion Wilson verbally threatened the victim to not tell anyone what they did.
All three incidents took place at the victim’s home where his younger brother saw what happened and told his uncle who reported Wilson to the police.
Wilson, who served time for three other sexual offence convictions in the 1980s and ‘90s, admitted to police what he did. The victim has since relocated from Keremeos where the incidents took place.
Wilson is himself a victim of child abuse, which led him to be a male prostitute later in life, however Judge Gregory Koturbash said Wilson’s unfortunate upbringing is not an excuse for his behaviour anymore.
A psychiatric exam conducted on Wilson in 1997 said he is a “fixated homosexual pedophilloic (sex) offender,” read Koturbash.
On top of his five-year sentence, Wilson will also be on the sex offender registry for life, is prohibited from having any contact with children or persons under the age of 16, or be within close proximity to a park, swimming pool or public place where there are minors.
