Central Okanagan Remembrance Day ceremonies

Remembrance Day parades and ceremonies are taking place throughout the Central Okanagan on Monday.

KELOWNA – There are a number of ceremonies planned in the Central Okanagan for Remembrance Day on Monday.

Kelowna
City Park Cenotaph
Organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, Kelowna Branch #26
At approximately 10:30 a.m. a parade of participating organizations and the Colour Party will march from Stuart Park along Abbott Street to the Cenotaph in City Park for the ceremony. Following the ceremony, participating youth groups are invited to the Legion Branch, 1380 Bertram St. for lunch. A period of social remembrance will be held in the Parkinson Recreation Centre, 1800 Parkinson Way from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Rutland
Lions Park Cenotaph
Organized by the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans Unit 376
The ceremony at the cenotaph in Lions Park will be preceded by a parade starting at 10:30 a.m. from the Unit Clubhouse parking lot at 270 Dougall Road North to Gray Road and into the park. Following the ceremony and parade dismissal, an Open House reception will be held at the Unit clubhouse, 270 Dougall Road North.

Lake Country
George Elliot Secondary School, 10241 Bottom Wood Lake Road
Organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, Oyama Branch #189
Please be seated inside George Elliot Secondary School by 10:30 a.m. Following the ceremony a Public Open House will be held at the Legion Branch, 15712 Oyama Road.

Peachland
Peachland Community Centre, 4450 6th Street
Organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, Peachland Branch #69
Fall in at 10:20 a.m. at the Peachland Community Centre.  At 11:00 a.m., there will be a fly-by at the Peachland Cenotaph. Following the ceremony, adults and children are welcome at the Peachland Legion on 2nd Street, while refreshments will be served for all children and their parents at the Peachland Community Centre.

West Kelowna
Royal LePage Place, 2760 Cameron Road, West Kelowna
Organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, Westbank Branch #288 ?
Please arrive by 10:30 a.m. as a parade involving participating organizations and the Colour Party precede the 11:00 a.m. ceremony. Following the ceremony, lunch will be served at the Branch for members and invited guests.

 

In Kelowna there will be road closures on Rembrance Day to accomodate the parades.

Roads will be temporarily closed between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Downtown road closures
·         Mill Street, from Queensway Avenue to Bernard Avenue
·         Bernard Avenue, from Mill Street to Abbott Street
·         Abbott Street, from Bernard Avenue to Lawrence Avenue
·         Lawrence Avenue, from Abbott Street to Water Street
·         Water Street, from Lawrence Avenue to Doyle Avenue

The closures on Mill Street, Bernard Avenue and Abbott Street will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. as Royal Canadian Legion veterans march to the Cenotaph in Veendam Gardens in City Park. Following the ceremony, the parade will proceed up Lawrence Avenue to Water Street between 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Parking will be prohibited along all these routes.

Rutland road closures
•      Dougall Road North and South, from McIntosh Road to Gray Road
•      Gray Road, from Dougall Road South to Pemberton Road
•      Pemberton Road, from Gray Road to Rutland Lions Park

Army, Navy and Air Force veterans will walk from Unit 376 on Dougall Road North to the Cenotaph at Rutland Lions Park on Gray Road and back. Motorists can expect minor delays as veterans cross at Highway 33 and Dougall Road before and after the ceremony.
RCMP will provide traffic control along both parade routes.

Kelowna Regional Transit employees will also pay their respects with one minute of silence at 11 a.m. All transit drivers will ensure their buses are safely pulled over to the curb and parked during this period.

Expect minor transit delays in the downtown and Queensway Exchange area between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Route #2 North end and #9 Shoppers Shuttle board on main transit island during this time as stop beside City Hall will be closed during this period.
