VERNON - The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society presents Rawk Camp hosted by the Whitehorse-based band Speed Control.

Designed for kids and youth ages 9 and up with at least one year of music lessons, we offer three programs based on skill level: Rawk On Stage for those with one or two years of music lessons, Rawk Smarter, Rawk Harder for those with at least two years of solid lessons and playing experience, and Bring Your Own Band for those who are already exploring stage musicianship!

This weekend of Rawk kicks off with a free one hour concert by Speed Control open to the public on Friday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a 30 minute meet-and-greet after the show where the camp participants meet the band.

Speed Control is Graeme Peters on guitar and vocals, Ian March on drums, and Jody Peters on bass and vocals. They are a hard-hitting rock trio and have dedicated themselves to furthering music education and bringing music into kids' lives. With a full endorsement and partnership with Yamaha Canada, Speed Control brings instruments to play and equipment to power the camps.

In addition to the action-packed sessions with members of Speed Control, we're hosting professional development sessions - Songwriting with Andrew Allen and Marketing 101 by Electric Paper Company's Lyle Doucette.

Add some cool lighting and special effects for the finale: On Sunday, May 15, the camp culminates in Vernon Rawks, a showcase performance on the main stage of the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre. Tickets are available for $10 each through the Ticket Seller Box Office at 250-549-SHOW (7469) or online at www.ticketseller.ca.

RAWK ON STAGE (max. 12 Participants)
Skill level required: At least a year of lessons required.
The goal is to grab onto the love of music and learn how to have fun performing with other musicians. The camp will include group lessons on individual instruments: guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, and vocals. They will be grouped into "rock bands", explore principles of mic technique and learn how to play to an audience by drawing the audience in with awesome onstage presence. The goal is to have 3 songs performance ready for the showcase.

Rawk On Stage Schedule:

Saturday, May 14 @ 9:00am-2:30pm Sunday

Skill level required: 2-3 years of solid playing experience and lessons.

Learn arranging skills and performance skills to make your set/sets more powerful and interactive. The material to be worked on at this level will be more challenging and more intense, resulting in a showcase performance at the end of the camp that will bring everyone to their feet!
