Filion, Moreau earn third straight honours at O'Brien Awards gala

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Once again Sylvain Filion and Richard Moreau are O'Brien Award winners.

Sylvain was named Canada's top driver for the third straight year Saturday night at the O'Brien Awards, which honour Canada's best harness-racing performers. Not to be outdone, Moreau captured top trainer honours also for a third consecutive season.

Filion, 46, of Milton, Ont., also won the award in 2012 and '14. This year, he drove 343 winners and amassed over $6.9 million in earnings and Nov. 16 earned his 8,000th career win at Woodbine Racetrack.

Moreau, 51, of Puslinch, Ont., led all trainers with 271 wins and finished second in earnings at $3.6 million.

Dr. Ian Moore, of Summerside, P.E.I., captured the O'Brien Award of Horsemanship. He had 62 wins and earned over $2.1 million. His stable star, State Treasurer, was named the top older pacing horse as well as Canada's horse of the year.

State Treasurer won The Canadian Pacing Derby, the country's oldest stake event, at Mohawk Racetrack. It was one of nine victories for the six-year-old son of Real Desire, who also amassing over $966,000 in earnings.

LA Delight was named top two-year-old pacing filly. The daughter of Bettors Delight won 11-of-12 starts and over $704,000 in earnings.

Control The Moment claimed top two-year-old pacing colt honours after winning eight-of-nine starts and $461,000 in earnings. The highlight of the year was defeating North America's best colts in the Metro Pace at Mohawk with a season-best time of 1:49.4.

Solar Sister was named top three-year-old pacing filly after winning eight races and over $554,000 while Wakizashi Hanover claimed top three-year-old pacing colt honours after winning 11 races and over $1.2 million.

Lady Shadow won a second straight O'Brien Award, this time as top older pacing mare. She won five races and $360,000.

Caprice Hill was voted top two-year-old trotting filly after finishing no lower than third in 10 starts. Caprice Hill won seven races and earned $593,000.

Southwind Frank claimed two-year-old trotting colt honours after winning 11-of-12 races. Included was a Breeders Crown championship to go with $941,000 in purse money.

Mission Brief was voted Canada's top three-year-old trotting filly after registering 10 wins and over $1 million.

Pinkman, North America's richest trotter in 2015, claimed top honours in the three-year-old trotting colt division. The son of Explosive Matter won 11 races and over $2 million.
