MONTREAL - The fiancee of Parti Quebecois Leader Pierre Karl Peladeau says her entertainment firm will end TV production because the government has denied the company a lucrative tax credit.
A teary-eyed Julie Snyder made the announcement Monday, saying she was forced to do so because she no longer receives the money, which is given to independent producers.
Under changes contained in the last provincial budget, companies such as Snyder's Productions J that are tied to TV networks are no longer allowed to collect the credit.
Premier Philippe Couillard has said the goal was to create an equal playing field, given that much of Productions J's content is broadcast on TVA, the television network owned by Peladeau's Quebecor Inc. (TSX:QBR.B).
Snyder has suggested the Liberals acted out of spite because of her relationship with Peladeau, who was elected PQ leader in May.
The popular Quebec producer and host says she's not leaving Productions J, but that a large part of its activities would cease.
Productions J is also involved in live events, talent management and the music industry.
Couillard reiterated in Montreal on Monday the changes were made to ensure that "no company enjoys a special position compared to others."
Snyder said she's evaluating different scenarios to ensure the firm remains in good hands and that most employees keep their jobs, although some have been laid off in recent weeks.
She wouldn't comment on the future of some of the most popular Quebec shows, but TVA's management said in a brief statement it is confident they would continue.
"It's super hard, this is my baby," Snyder said, fighting back tears. "It's really as if you're giving your baby to someone else. I've sacrificed my days, my nights, all my energy."
Peladeau and Snyder are scheduled to wed in mid-August.
