VICTORIA - It took only about four minutes for a family in Victoria to triple in size.
Mark Brown says his wife Alicia gave birth to quadruplets Riley, Emma, Alyssa and Liam between 7:41 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. at Victoria General Hospital on Tuesday.
He says the three girls and one boy were born at 29 weeks and are doing well but they will spend the next eight weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Health authority spokeswoman Sarah Plank says the babies are fraternal and identical twins and that the birth of quadruplets is a fairly rare event at the hospital.
Victoria-area resident Lisa Sorensen and her husband Tim became parents to four boys at the same hospital in December 2008.
Brown says he and his wife are grateful for the support they've received from their family, friends and the larger community but are asking for privacy so they can bond with their new babies.
