Man, 70, wanted in shooting death of Ontario businessman: police

VAUGHAN, Ont. - A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for the arrest of a 70-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of a Toronto-area businessman while he was horseback riding.

Donato Frigo, 70, of Caledon, Ont., was fatally shot on Sept. 13, as he and a female companion were riding horses near a wildlife conservation area in the municipality of Central Huron in southwestern Ontario.

Ontario Provincial Police say Boris Panovski of Toronto is wanted on charges of murder and attempted murder and is considered armed and dangerous.

Police have released few details about the incident but have said Frigo and the woman — whose identity has not been released — were taking part in dog training exercises when they were approached by a man who shot and killed the businessman.

Det. Supt. Dave Truax says the victim and accused were known to each other but would not give details on their relationship. As for what exactly took place during the incident, Truax said only that "an altercation occurred."

The woman suffered minor injuries and was able to get to safety, police said, adding she is not considered a person of interest in the investigation.

"I'm not at liberty to discuss her medical condition, however I can assure you that she is in a place of safety," said Truax.

The weekend shooting drew a heavy police presence to the quiet farming community on the outskirts of Clinton, Ont.

While some local residents expressed concern about the large numbers of police in the area following the incident, and what they felt was insufficient information provided to them, Truax said police had to be cautious.

"When a police operation like that is underway there needs to be a balance in relation to the information that is broadcast widely to the public," he said, adding that a suspect could also be monitoring the media.

"We certainly recognize our duty to inform the media of our actions and to assure public safety, because that is first and foremost our focus."

Truax said anyone who knows Panovski's whereabouts is advised not to attempt to confront him but to contact police immediately.

The suspect is described as being five feet seven inches tall and about 200 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, although police say he may have changed his appearance.

Investigators also want to speak with anyone who may have had any contact with Panovski in the past seven days or who may have seen his vehicle, described as a blue 1998 Toyota four-door sedan, near the Hullett Wildlife Conservation Area on the day of the shooting.
