A 26-year-old-man known to police was taken into custody after a standoff with RCMP this afternoon in downtown Kamloops.

"He was distraught and was threatening to harm himself," says RCMP spokesperson, Staff Sgt. Grant Learned. "He had in his possession, we were told, a syringe… threatening to inject himself."

The man was visiting a lady acquaintance at her Seymour Street apartment at about 3 p.m. when the incident began. The woman left her home and called police. The man has been reported for three incidents in the last two days says Learned.

"The last little while he's been having some serious emotional problems that have brought him to the attention of family members and police as well."

RCMP units surrounded the building and convinced the man to come out through the apartment door.

"After probably 25 to 40 minutes… the man gave up and was taken into custody," Learned said.

"While we were talking with him, his mother and his uncle came down, and they also assisted with police."

The man sustained minor cuts to his face after trying to escape out of a third-floor window.
