SALMON ARM - The Penticton Vees simply ran out of gas Saturday, in a 4-2 loss to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. The Vees came into Saturday’s game on the heels of a double-overtime win over Vernon one night earlier and going into the match-up with Salmon, had four of the their last five games go into double-overtime.
The Silverbacks manufactured two goals on the power-play Saturday, including the game’s first goal midway through the first period. On the ‘Backs first man-advantage, Thomas Plese redirected a Mitch Ferguson point-shot past the arm of Hunter Miska at 12:19; the first power-play goal given up by the Vees in their last three games.
Jack Ramsey and Cam Amantea teamed-up to bring the Vees back level inside the final minute of first. Ramsey drove hard down the right-wing before throwing a shot on goal from the right-circle. Ramsey was stopped but Amantea, driving the net, forced the rebound across the goal-line at 19:19; his fourth of the season.
Salmon Arm would use their power-play to break a deadlock near the midway point of the second period. Forty-two seconds after the Vees went down a skater; Evan Anderson put the Silverbacks back ahead at 9:21. Ferguson threaded the needle to Anderson in the right-circle, who wasted no time in putting a shot up high over a sprawled Miska.
The Silverbacks seemed to put the game out of reach eight minutes into the third, when they scored two goals just thirty-six seconds apart. Mark Whiteley scored right off a face-off in the Vees end, as his shot from the blue-line found its way through traffic in front of the Vees net and past Miska at 7:57. On the next shift, Landon Smith put the ‘Backs ahead by three, after he finished off a cross-ice feed. The puck went into the Vees corner and Max Becker spotted Smith at the back-post, who beat Miska up high over the blocker at 8:33.
Cody DePourcq did pull the Vees within two late in the period. DePourcq made a nice play in the neutral zone to get the puck around the defenseman, before breaking into the Silverbacks zone on the right-wing. DePourcq then wired a wrist-shot over the glove of Adam Clark at 18:59; his seventh but too little too late.

The Vees were without three defensemen in Alex Coulombe, Brett Beauvais and Paul Stoykewych, as all three are at the Team Camp West selection camp in Calgary. The Vees have now dropped the first two encounters with Salmon Arm this season and both at the Shaw Centre; the two don’t play again until January 18th.
The Vees records drops to 11-4-1-1 and they’re now winless in their last five road games dating back to September 14th. They still do however hold a share of first place in the Interior Division despite the loss. They’re now tied on points with West Kelowna after the Warriors lost 3-2 in overtime Saturday in Langley.
It’s now a thirteen day break for the Vees, as they don’t play again until November 8th in Powell River; a start of a three game Island Division road trip. The Vees don’t play at home for the next twenty days, as their next four are all away from the SOEC; back home November 16th versus Nanaimo.
