PENTICTON - The Penticton Vees shook off some early struggles and posted their 11th straight win, downing the Prince George Spruce Kings 5-2 Friday night, Oct. 17, at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The Vees haven’t lost a game since dropping their season opener in Salmon Arm on Sept. 11.

Penticton got a boost from their blue-line, in particular Dante Fabbro and Colton Poolman. The defensive pairing combined for five points, all assists, in the Vees fifth win in as many games at the SOEC. Easton Brodzinski scored twice and Ben Brar, Scott Conway and Demico Hannoun added singles. Conway also tacked on two assists in the victory.

Zach Driscoll was solid between the pipes, winning his third straight start, turning aside 20 of 22 shots; he’s won both games against PG this year.

Conway opened the scoring inside the final half-minute of the first period. On the Vees second power-play of the game, Conway ripped a shot from the circle over starter Liam McCloskey at 19:34; Conway bagging his team-leading eleventh of the year.

PG knotted things up early in the second as Braiden Epp poked in a puck in front. Adam Brubacher centered for Epp who nudged the puck through Driscoll at 4:22.

Demico Hannoun snapped a seven-game goal-less drought late in the second to push the home side ahead. Hannoun took a drop pass from Luke Voltin and put a backhand upstairs from the left-circle at 15:26; his second goal of the season.

The Spruce Kings didn’t go away and drew a penalty shortly after that Hannoun goal and made the most of the opportunity. On the man-advantage, Bryan Basilico, from the left-circle, squeezed a shot through the arm and body of Driscoll at 17:44

But the Vees had an answer for that goal too, as Easton Brodzinski beat the buzzer. With the clock about strike zero, Brodzinski picked up the puck in the circle and wired a wrist into the top corner on the far-side at 19:58; just 1.9 seconds showing on the clock.

Ben Brar provided the insurance marker later in third period, as he showed-off  good hand-eye skills, redirecting Colton Poolman’s point-shot through McCloskey’s legs at 14:38; Brar’s second of the season and both now coming against PG.

Brodzinski put things on ice inside the final-minute, as he buried the empty-netter from the neutral zone at 19:38; Brodzinski with his second straight two-goal game.

Final Score: 5-2 Vees

Shots: 36-22 Vees

Power-Plays: Vees 1-4 Prince George 1-3

Three Stars: 1) Dante Fabbro 2) Colton Poolman 3) Ben Brar

Attendance: 2,114

Scott Conway (11-games) and Dante Fabbro (9-games) extended their point-streaks in the win. Conway has had at least a point in every Vees game since September 16th. Fabbro leads all BCHL defenseman in scoring, with five goals and 19 points in 12 games. Conway’s (11-12-23) three points means he’s moved into a tie with Tyson Jost for the team’s scoring lead.

The Vees (11-1-0-0) host the Mainland Division leading Langley Rivermen (8-3-0-0) tomorrow at the SOEC; puck drop is 6pm. Langley were 5-1 winners in Trail on Friday. Fans can get their tickets at the Valley First box office (at the SOEC), or online at www.valleyfirsttix.com
