KELOWNA - A freestyle motocross rider from Kelowna who was paralyzed two years ago while attempting a double front flip will be featured in a documentary airing this weekend on NBC.

Bruce Cook is well known in motocross circles, but is perhaps more widely known for his horrific accident at the Nitro Circus event in January 2014. He was injured during an attempt to complete the first ever ramp-to-ramp double front flip at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ont.

Never Say Can’t: The Bruce Cook Story is about Cook’s remarkable recovery and his refusal to let his injury get in the way.

He was back on his motocross bike in just nine months and has since used his experience during his recovery as a positive motivator for others.

Cook made history in October 2015 as the first paraplegic to pull of a backflip in front of a major audience at a Nitro Circus performance in Toronto.

At the time, Cook told iNFOnews.ca the backflip was the realization of a goal he set for himself during the hardest time of his life.

“It felt amazing,” Cook said. “I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of years now. I came up a tiny bit short but I’m not going to complain. The goal was to get wheels-down and that’s what happened.”

Cook said since the accident he has dedicated his life to inspiring people and promoting a “never say can’t attitude.”

“When you put your mind to something you can make it happen. If I can lead people to try things they normally wouldn’t it makes this journey all worth it.”

You can catch Never Say Can’t: The Bruce Cook Story at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, July 10 on NBC.
