PEACHLAND - If there's nothing like having the sun on your face and wind in your hair while pulling a paddle through the water along the lake on a Sunday morning, there's a new event happening that may be just the thing to do this weekend.

The first ever Rattlesnake Island SUP Classic takes place in Peachland this Sunday, Aug. 24.

The race is approximately 8 kilometres beginning on the shores of Okanagan Lake out to Rattlesnake Island and back. The event is open to everyone from “brave new explorers to avid paddle boarders,” said Jan Udala, owner of Beach Ride Rental Co., the company hosting the event.

The idea to host a race came from some regular paddlers who thought it would be a great way to encourage more people to try the sport, and something fun for avid paddlers, she said.

Udala said she is hoping the race will become an annual event, but for right now it’s about getting people out to have some fun and try paddle boarding, which is becoming an increasingly popular sport.

The race starts on Sunday at 10 a.m. and people can register on race day at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee is $40 and can be paid before Sunday by calling 1-844-783-7737 or 1-250-549-0999 or email beachride11@gmail.com.
