EAGLE BAY - A man who was scuba diving to check on his dock and did not surface at the expected time prompted an emergency call yesterday.

A man was in the water at his dock in Eagle Bay yesterday, May 31, and when he did not surface on time, emergency services were called in, RCMP say in a release.

He surfaced while they were en route, saying he simply lost track of time.

RCMP are reminding scuba divers to use a buddy system and never dive alone. Salmon Arm RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West also reminds divers local search and rescue, police, ambulance and fire personnel are not equipped to perform dives and military search and rescue from Comox would have to be called in, extending the response time significantly.

“It is a sport so lets do it safely,” West says in the release.
