Five things revealed about the Ottawa shooting by RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson

OTTAWA - Five things we learned Thursday from RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson:

— The close security detail for Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been upgraded to a 24-7 operation.

— Gunman Michael Zehaf Bibeau was not on the RCMP watch list of terror suspects, his passport application had not been rejected but was under review, and he had no connection to the assailant slain on Monday in Quebec by police after running down two Canadian Forces members, killing one.

— An email from Zehaf Bibeau was found on the hard drive of an individual who faces terrorism-related charges, and he was seeking a passport with the intention of travelling to Syria.

— Kevin Vickers, the sergeant-at-arms of the House of Commons, exchanged gunfire with Zehaf Bibeau at close range from behind a pillar in the Hall of Honour. Zehaf Bibeau's weapon was a lever action Winchester 30-30 rifle.

— Two RCMP vehicles were immediately on Zehaf Bibeau's tail as he drove up Parliament Hill after comandeering a cabinet minister's car, and officers were seconds behind him going in the front doors.
