Open burning season begins this weekend in Central Okanagan

KELOWNA - It's officially fall, and along with the cooler weather, comes the beginning of open burning season in the Central Okanagan.

Open burning season starts on Oct. 1 and must be complete by April 30, according to a media release from the Regional District of the Central Okanagan

The regional district says local fire chiefs may adjust the dates depending on the local fire hazard rating and property owners must obtain a permit before burning.

Getting a permit doesn't allow residents to conduct open burns on a whim. Residents must call the toll-free outdoor burning hotline at 1-855-262-2876 for information on whether open burning is allowed on that day.

Venting and air quality conditions must be good in order to start an open burn. Information on daily air quality is posted every day at 8 a.m. on the regional district website.

Yard waste like leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, weeds and other garden waste is not allowed to be burned. Those wanting to dispose of yard waste can take advantage of the bi-weekly curb-side pickup program, in effect until the end of November. Leaves, grass, pine needles and small weeds or prunings should be placed in the green yard waste cart with the lid closed.

Those who do not follow regulations can be fined or charged with the cost of putting the fire out. Authorities are asking for the public's help in reporting anyone illegally burning by calling the Regional Fire Dispatch Centre at 1-250-469-8577.

Campfires are not allowed in city limits.
