MERRITT - The driver of a small car is dead after running into a broken down commercial vehicle on the side of the highway this morning.

The driver and lone occupant of a vehicle travelling southbound on the Coquihalla Highway died after running into the back of a broken down commercial vehicle which had been pulling a flat deck trailer, RCMP say in a release.

Police say the commercial vehicle was on the right shoulder with emergency triangles in place and was not on the travel portion of the roadway.

The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. today, May 30, about four kilometres south of Merritt. Weather and road conditions were considered good at the time.

The investigation into the crash continues and the highway is open in both directions.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured. Police have not released the age or identity of the person driving the car.
