A digital speed reader sign was stolen in Merritt this past weekend, along with the lock and chain that was securing it, and the police are asking the public for help finding it.

The sign was stolen from the 2300 block of Coldwater Avenue in Merritt in the early Saturday morning, Dec. 2, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Dec. 6.

Police say the thieves would have had to use a bolt cutter or grinder to cut the lock or chain.

"The Merritt Community police office uses portable speed signs in strategic locations throughout the City of Merritt to encourage the public to slow down and to track speed statistics," RCMP Const. Blake Chursinoff said in the release.

"We are hoping to have the sign returned so we can continue to use it to encourage drivers to slow down around schools, parks and high traffic pedestrian areas."

Anyone with information about the stolen speed sign, or knows where it is, is asked contact the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
