Machinery catches fire at furniture factory

Six trucks were on scene to fight a fire at Huber's Heritage Furniture in Vernon.

VERNON - Firefighters from two departments responded to reports of a fire at Huber's Furniture at 8111 Highland Place just after 3 p.m. today.

Coldstream Fire Department Capt. Bill Wacey says dispatch received a call that a compressor was burning and when firefighters arrived found a piece of machinery completely engulfed in flames.

The furniture factory had a full crew working inside when the fire erupted and everyone was evacuated. Nobody was injured.

The fire was quickly under control with the combined efforts of 20 firefighters and half a dozen trucks from BX Swan Lake and Armstrong Spullumcheen Fire and Rescue.

The building received some smoke and fire damage, as well as water damage from the sprinkler system, which was difficult to shut off, Capt. Wacey says.

Fire crews are expected to remain on scene until about 5:30 p.m. to finish the cleanup and salvaging process.
