License plate scan leads to arrest in Kamloops

A 19-year-old Kamloops man who is well known to police will appear in court today after being picked up for breach of bail conditions yesterday in downtown Kamloops.

RCMP patrol officers noticed the man standing near the Kamloops Battle Street RCMP detachment talking on a cell phone when they ran his plate.

"When the officers checked the license plate of the vehicle, they learned that the registered owner had various bail conditions including that he was not to possess a cell phone," said Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell in a press release issued today.

Upon searching the man and his vehicle, a loaded handgun was found 'tucked in the pocket of the driver's door.'

The man was arrested at the scene and charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and failure to comply with a recognizance.

His bail is connected to charges from January related to drug possession in Penticton.
