Library system launches newspaper archive

KAMLOOPS - The Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library System is officially launching a newspaper digitization project called NewsHound at the Kamloops Family History Society Conference on Friday, May 1.

This project, which can be found at arch.tnrdlib.ca/, is a partnership between the TNRD Library System and Thompson Rivers University Library, the Kamloops Museum and Archives, and the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives. The goal is to permanently preserve an important part of the Regional District’s rich history.

Initially, the project will have archived newspapers from Kamloops, including Kamloops This Week and the Kamloops Daily News, as well as newspapers from Merritt, such as the Merritt Herald and the Merritt News.

NewsHound hopes to eventually digitize all of the historical newspapers published within the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, which are believed to date back as early as 1880 with the Inland Sentinel.

The project received generous support from the Ike Barber Learning Centre at UBC, which provided funding through the B.C. History Digitization Project.
