KAMLOOPS - Traffic lights were not working and more than 1,400 customers were without power in downtown Kamloops following a large power outage this afternoon.

The first outage came just before 2:30 p.m. and hit the area of Sahali Terrace and Pemberton Terrace. More than 70 customers are affected in that area. B.C. Hydro identified the problem as equipment failure and expect to have the problem fixed by 10 p.m.

Just after 3 p.m. a larger outage hit the majority of the downtown core. More than 1,300 customers were affected by the second outage, which shut down businesses and street lights throughout the downtown area.

The larger outage is being blamed on a cable fault and power was restored in stages to customers. More than 600 customers saw power restored by about 4 p.m. while another 560 were restored by about 7:30 p.m. The remaining customers saw power restored by 8 p.m.
