KELOWNA - The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-1 on Saturday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna in a match-up of the top two teams in the Western Hockey League.

Jackson Whistle stopped 31 of 32 Brandon shots in a first star performance, while Madison Bowey scored twice and Nick Merkley had a goal and three assists in the game.

After a scoreless first period, Brandon opened the scoring early in the second period but it was Kelowna who got their game going after the game’s opening goal.

Second period goals by Madison Bowey and Rourke Chartier gave Kelowna a 2-1 lead after two periods of play and Kelowna added four more in the third period to skate away with the win.

Bowey had his second of the game in the third, Merkley added his first before Austin Glover and Cole Martin wrapped up the scoring.

Kelowna improved to a WHL best 12-1-0-0 with the win.

The Rockets begin a stretch of three straight games on the road beginning next weekend with a pair of games in Portland next weekend as the Rockets will play Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 in Portland before playing in Vancouver Nov. 2.

Kelowna returns to Prospera Place Wednesday Nov. 5 to host the Victoria Royals.
