Kelowna city council highlights: May 12

Westcorp hotel
Council forwarded the Westcorp hotel development to a public hearing on June 24. Consideration will be given to amendments to the Official Community Plan and rezoning to accommodate the development of a hotel with retail, restaurant and conference space on the corner of Queensway and Water Street.

Centre of Gravity
Council received an update on plans for the 2014 Centre of Gravity Festival. The 2014 event will be held July 25-27 on the North Field in City Park, minimizing damage to the sports field. It will also feature increased security and improved waste management in and around the event site.

Outdoor events
Council received an update on 2014 outdoor events, which include races, festivals, one-day celebrations, fundraisers, parades, awareness events, tournaments, films, weddings and church events. Inaugural events include a new triathlon, cycling camp and rugby sevens tournament. For more information, check out the outdoor event notices at kelowna.ca/roadreport.

Vernon Creek
Council received a report on the Vernon Creek Risk Assessment and directed staff to report back with more information about the proposed flume repair project, which would see removal of the existing concrete flume, installation of a creek liner and placement of rocks to prevent erosion.

Small Shop Days
Council approved free parking downtown for Small Shop promotion days on Thursday, June 19 starting at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 25 all day.

Regional Growth Strategy
Council endorsed a recommendation to provide support for the Regional District to adopt  the Regional District of Central Okanagan Regional Growth Strategy Bylaw, the purpose of which is “to promote human settlement that is socially, economically, and environmentally healthy and that makes efficient use of public facilities and services, land and other resources.”
