Kamloops, Kelowna to celebrate End of the World

The world may not come to an end on Dec. 21 as the Mayans predicted, but Kamloops may not be so lucky.

A Facebook event circulating online has generated about 14,200 confirmed guests to attend an "end of the world party" expected to take place in Barnhartvale the evening before the Mayan prediction of the world ending.

While perhaps not as populous as the party in Kamloops, Kelowna has its own version.

Three bands will rock The Grateful Fed Pub in Kelowna Friday, Dec. 21 to honour the Mayans and their prediction that the end of the world will indeed come that day.? ?Doors open for the "Merry Dickmas V -- End of the World Edition" at 9:30 p.m. Dan Oig will open the evening at 10 p.m., followed by Whisky Dick at 10:50 p.m., and Dracula Black at 11:45 p.m.
The Grateful Fed is located at 509 Bernard in Kelowna.

The outdoor party on Campbell Range Road is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 20 according to the Facebook event page.

"Last day of existence (apparently)," the event description said. "Invite everyone, let's make this the biggest party in the world, the night we all (are) supposed (to) die…lol."

The event comments date back to 2009.

"Let's go out with a bang," said one of the first comments posted Oct. 15, 2009. "Party in two and a half years!! Booking it off already!" said another post dated the next day.?
Since then, comments and attendees have snowballed. Another 5,600 people are 'invited' to the bash while 3,800 people said 'maybe' they would attend. Kamloops resident Tom O'Riordan is listed as attending the event, but he said he doesn't know if he will actually go.

"I was kind of thinking about it, but it would be so sketchy," he said.

He doesn't remember when he joined the event.

"It started when the whole world was ending thing came out, and it just came up," he said. "I think everyone is, not excited, but intrigued. There's always the joke that if there's that many people then it actually will be the end of the world."

The location is not new to him. He said South Kamloops Secondary school students often party there, and it can accommodate a large amount of people.

"There's probably been close to thousand-people-parties up there—not so much anymore—but a couple years ago they used to get pretty big."

Many confirmed attendees are from outside Kamloops, but O'Riordan says his own friends have also confirmed.

"The majority of people I know have signed up for it, but you know what it's like," he said, noting that Facebook can be unreliable.

Another Facebook public event promotes people to hold parties in cities around the world.

"Let's break the record for the biggest, most attended global 'eCelebration' event on Facebook!!" the description said.

A similar Facebook event was posted in Clearwater, B.C. but has generated less participants - about 142 confirmed guests.
